Homeschooling Conference Feb. 3/4th, 2012

Mrs. Virginia Seuffert of the Seton Home School program has generously offered to give a conference for parents concerning good practices for a successful home school program. The first talk will follow the 6pm Mass on Friday, Feb. 3; the other two talks will follow the 9am Mass on Saturday, Feb. 4. These talks will be a great resource for the parish, as we enjoy a high number of home school families.

The talks will be given in the basement of the church, which we all know can get quite noisy. For this reason, and because these talks are really directed to parents rather than the whole family, I appeal to your spirit of charity and ask that, if possible, please make arrangements to have someone watch your children at home. In the case that arrangements cannot be made, you are still most welcome as it is better to attend with family than to miss the talks.

I want to stress that the talks, especially the first one, emphasize how critical it is to have the father actively engaged in the home school program, so I strongly encourage the fathers to attend the talks – it is not just for the moms!

To accommodate everyone who will attend the conference there will be a sign up sheet posted in the vestibule. Everyone needs to register.

Rosary Procession – October 2010

On Sunday, October 2nd, 2010 members of St. Michael’s Church in Scranton processed through the streets as part of the annual celebration of the feast of Our Lady of the Rosary. During the procession parishoners prayed the 15 traditional mysteries of the Rosary and sang hymns for Our Lady. Bystanders were given prayer cards and Rosaries from the parish children.

First Friday Exposition: We are looking at having five families each hour to pray before the Blessed Sacrament for First Fridays. The sign-up sheet for Mar.5th is in the vestibule of the Church: Adoration will begin at 8:30 a.m. and will end with Benediction at 5:00 p.m.

First Saturday is Mar. 6th: You are asked to pra y the Rosary, go to Confession and Holy Communion in repara- tion for the sins and blasphemies against the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Please help our unborn children and join the First Saturday Rosary at Planned Parenthood, 316 Penn Ave., after the 9:00 Mass.

Miraculous Medal Novena: Every Tuesday at 7:00 p.m. followed by Adoration and Benediction of the Blessed Sacrament.

11:45 a.m. Mass: This Mass has been scheduled to facilitate families who live at a distance from the Church. Families and individuals should consider integrating at least one weekday Mass into their schedule.

St. Patrick’s Day Brunch

Thank you very much to those who organized the St. Patrick’s Day Brunch! It was truly wonderful. Many thanks to His Excellency, Bishop Timlin for coming along. We are most grateful to him for this! We also thank all those who made sure that it was so well attended. The entertainment was another great display of the talent that we have in our parish. Well done, all around! Fr. O’Leary.

Why are there so many signs of the cross during the Canon of the Mass? (the Canon is the silent part after the Sanctus through the priest’s Communion)

Reply Obj. 3. The priest, in celebrating the mass, makes use of the sign of the cross to signify Christ’s Passion which was ended upon the cross. Now, Christ’s Passion was accomplished in certain stages. First of all there was Christ’s betrayal, which was the work of God, of Judas, and of the Jews; and this is signified by the triple sign of the cross at the words, These gifts, these presents, these holy unspotted sacrifices.

Secondly, there was the selling of Christ. Now He was sold to the Priests, to the Scribes, and to the Pharisees: and to signify this the threefold sign of the cross is repeated, at the words, blessed, enrolled, ratified. Or again, to signify the price for which he was sold, viz. thirty pence. And a double cross is added at the words—that it may become to us the Body and the Blood, etc., to signify the person of Judas the seller, and of Christ Who was sold.

Thirdly, there was the foreshadowing of the Passion at the last supper. To denote this, in consecrating the body, the other in consecrating the blood; each time while saying, He blessed.

Fourthly, there was Christ’s Passion itself. And so in order to represent His five wounds, in the fourth place, there is a fivefold signing of the cross at the words, a pure Victim, a holy Victim, a spotless Victim, the holy bread of eternal life, and the cup of everlasting salvation.

Fifthly, the outstretching of Christ’s body, and the shedding of the blood, and the fruits of the Passion, are signified by the triple signing of the cross at the words, as many as shall receive the body and blood, may be filled with every blessing, etc.

Sixthly, Christ’s threefold prayer upon the cross is

represented; one for His persecutors when He said,

Father, forgive them; the second for deliverance from death, when He cried, My God, My God, why hast Thou forsaken Me? The third referring to His entrance into glory, when He said, Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit; and in order to denote these there is a triple signing with the cross made at the words, Thou dost sanctify, quicken, bless.

Seventhly, the three hours during which He hung upon the cross, that is from the sixth to the ninth hour, are represented; in signification of which we make once

more a triple sign of the cross at the words, Through

Him, and with Him and in Him.

Eighthly, the separation of his soul from the body is signified by the two subsequent crosses made over the chalice.

Ninthly, the resurrection on the third day is reprsented by the three crosses made at the words—May the peace of the Lord be ever with you.

In short, we may say that the consecration of this sacrament, and the acceptance of this sacrifice, and its fruits, proceed from the virtue of the cross of Christ, and therefore wherever mention is made of these, the

priest makes use of the sign of the cross.
